Westernriding

Reining
One of the most spectacular discipline of westernriding is Reining.
Riders should show total control over every movement of their horses.
During the test the horse's neatness, manoeuverability, calm and
ease in combination with speed are evaluated. |
Sliding stops, spins, rollbacks, changements and speedcontrol are
tested galloping and reversing a pattern of small and larger circles.
Every combination starts with 70 points. The jury rewards very
well ridden disciplines with plus points and gives minus points
to badly executed parts of the test.

Cowclasses
A horse suited for this work should have Reining capabilities as
well as Cow Sense. A horse with Cow Sense is a horse able of thinking
faster and manoeuvering faster than a cow. Besides, of mayor importance
is that horse and rider should understand each other very well,
but of course this goes for all sorts of tests.
In order to train the horse a mechanical cow is often used, that
is moved from left to right at high or low speed. The horse should
learn to stay at a specified distance from the cow.
There are three disciplines:
- Cutting
- Team Penning
- Working Cow-horse
|
|
Cutting
The discipline Cutting has the rider choose a cow from the herd
in the penning. Rider and horse have to approach the herd without
disturbing them too much. As soon as the rider has determined which
cow to separate from the herd the combination have to drive the
cow as closly as possible to the centre of the penning.
Two riders, the turnback men, keep the cow in the middle of the
penning, while two others, the herd holders, keep the herd at the
short side of het penning. |
It's the cow's task to prevent the cow from going back to its herd.
It's also important for the horse to remain at the right distance
from the cow.
The test takes 150 seconds and starts the moment the combination
has separated the cow from the herd.

Team Penning
Team Penning is a match based on the work of a cowboy. As the name
leads one to suspect the match is played in a team.
A team of three combinations should separate three animals from
a herd of calves to the other side of the arena and drive them into
a penning. It may only take 90 seconds. Timing starts as soon as
the first horse's nose has crossed the startline and the clock stops
if all three calves are inside the penning and the fence is closed. |
| |
| The riders should select
the appointed calves carefully and manage to keep other calves from
crossing the startline. To prevent the same calves being captured
time and again, they all get a different colour shown as a ribbon
or a distinctive mark.
One of the three calves to be captured and separated by the team
must wear the team's colour. Team Penning is used by many riders
in order to accustom their horses to working with cattle.

Working Cow-horse
A Working Cow-horse is a horse that is suitable for work on a ranch.
The principles of Reining are needed for this discipline. On top
of that the horse should show some Cow Sense. The Working Cow-horse
consists of two parts: dry-work (a Reining test without cattle)
and fence-work (with cattle).

For the fence-work a cow enters the arena. At first the horse should
keep this cow under control at the short side of the arena.

Barrelrace
Westernriding has a number of speed matches. If we take into account
the Quarter Horse's qualities this is hardly surprising. After all,
Quarter Horses are the fastest horses at the quarter mile. Three
popular speed matches are the Barrelrace, Polebending and Team Penning. |
| |
| One of the most exciting
speed matches is the Barrelrace. Three barrels are placed in a triangle.
Every barrel has to be circles by the horse and rider. The combination
are allowed to choose which one of the three to circle in the first
place. This will be the one on the left or the right, for the third
barrel is put at the end of the arena and is the last one to be
circled.
Then the riders sprint back to the finish line. The horse that
is there first and didn't turn over any barrels wins the match.

Pleasure
A good western-pleasure horse should live up to its name. It should
be a real pleasure to ride this horse. Pleasurehorse riders ride
together in the arena and have to show the Walk, the Jog and the
Lope at bridle and right hand. When the command "reverse"
is given, the riders turn 180 degrees from the track. |
This command can be given at Walk or Jog. At the end of the test
they have to do this backwards. Riders of Senior horses have to
keep the bridles in one hand and may not change them.
The free hand may not touch the horse and / or saddle. Junior horses
are ridden with bridles in two hands. The jury judges the horse's
quiet behaviour and swift reactions to the riders' directives at
transitions.

Westernriding
Westernriders have to do a dressage test on a prescribed track,
while the abilities of the horse is being judged. The test can consist
of all kinds of practices, such as riding over a bar which is just
high enough to interrupt the horse's gait but not too high for the
horse to have to jump. It's also possible the horses have to do
some gallop changements around a couple of counters. Horse and rider
have to show this ability at the different gaits Walk, Jog and Lope.

At the end of the track the combination goes from gallop right
to a complete stop and then goes in a straight line backwards. The
jury judges if the horse responds to the rider's commands without
resistance, whether it is calm and willing and whether its attitude
is relaxed and ellegant.

Trailclass
At trailclass the track consists of several obstacles that you
could also come across in the open, in the countryside - trailriding
means riding in the open air. The trail consists of three obligatory
obstacles: opening and closing a fence, reversing a track made of
bars and riding over four bars.

Other obstacles may be used as well, as long as they are not loose
and not higher than 45 cm and as long as they are not dangerous
for horse and rider. Examples are: bars that have to be crossed
sidewaysby the combination or turning round within a wooden square,
wading through a kind of ditch or crossing a wooden bridge.
